Man arrested following two distraction burglaries in Portsmouth
Police officers from Hampshire Constabulary are investigating two distraction burglaries in Portsmouth, in which a man has claimed to be collecting money for charity. The first incident happened in Liss Road. A man went to an address on 9 February claiming to be collecting for charity. He returned on the evening of 10 February to update the homeowner on how much money he’d collected. During the incident, a wallet was stolen from a coat pocket in the hallway. The second incident happened around noon on 11 February, when a man claiming to be collecting for charity stole a purse containing £30 and bank cards. The cards have since been used to make transactions totalling £800. A 42-year-old man from Portsmouth has been arrested on suspicion of two counts of burglary and possession of a class A drug. Police would like to remind the public, to never open your door to someone you don’t know or aren’t expecting – and make sure a caller is who they say they are before letting them into your home. Genuine callers will be happy to show you their identification or call back when someone else is at home with you.
