A young driver has been locked up for over three years after a fatal crash near Charlecote claimed the life of a 74-year-old man.
James Beames Gets 162 Weeks for Dangerous Driving Death
James David Beames, 21, from Lower Quinton, was handed a 162-week prison sentence at Warwick Crown Court on 9 March. He admitted causing death by dangerous driving.
The horror smash happened at about 6am on 7 March 2024 on the B4086. Beames’ Ford Fiesta crossed into the path of a Microcar driven by John Edward Nutt, who was from Wellesbourne.
Mr Nutt, 74, sadly died at the scene.
Driving Ban and Fines Added to Jail Term
Alongside his prison term, Beames was banned from driving for 78 months and slapped with a £228 victim surcharge.
Investigation Reveals Phone Use and Possible Fatigue
Investigator Craig Pearson revealed Beames had used his phone several times during the journey. However, it couldn’t be proven that he was on it at the exact time of the crash.
Beames also claimed he fell asleep at the wheel, but this was never confirmed.
“What is clear is that the actions of one driver cost the life of an innocent man,” said PC Pearson.
“Our message to all drivers is simple – put your phone on safe mode or keep it out of reach. No call or message is worth a life.”
