Police have launched an investigation after a sheep was chased over a cliff edge and died in a disturbing incident near Polly Joke beach, outside Newquay.
The incident occurred on Sunday, 27 July 2025, and involved a man and two teenage children who allegedly pursued the sheep until it plunged from the cliff. Members of the public reportedly confronted the man, who is said to have acted aggressively following the confrontation.
Community Shocked by “Unacceptable” Behaviour
Devon and Cornwall Police’s Rural Affairs team is working with local neighbourhood officers to investigate the case, which has caused outrage in the local community.
“We know this incident has had a huge impact on the local community,” said Sergeant Jones, speaking on behalf of the force.
“We can’t imagine why anyone would willingly chase or harm an innocent animal. Behaviour like this is unacceptable, and we will continue to work alongside investigating officers to bring the offender to justice.”
Appeal for Witnesses
Police believe several people witnessed the incident but have not yet come forward.
“We believe there were a number of people in the area at the time who may have vital information,” Sgt Jones added. “If you saw anything or captured footage, please contact us.”
