A brutal assault on a Bedfordshire Police officer has landed Liam Moriarty behind bars for two and a half years. The 31-year-old headbutted Special Constable Jack Capener with such force that both men were knocked out cold.

SPC Capener suffered a broken nose requiring stitches, confirmed by specialist Ear, Nose and Throat practitioners. The shocking attack happened on 6 September last year after Moriarty’s car crashed in Shefford.

Outburst Continued in Hospital

Despite his injuries, Moriarty’s violent spree wasn’t over. While receiving treatment at Bedford Hospital, he spat in the face of another officer and caused over £5,000 in damage to hospital equipment. Abuse towards officers continued amid the chaos.

Justice Served at Luton Crown Court

Moriarty, who has no fixed address, pleaded guilty earlier this year to grievous bodily harm, assault on an emergency worker, and criminal damage. On 27 February, he was sentenced to two and a half years, minus six months served on remand. Two other charges were left on file.

“Every officer knows the risk of danger when they go out. Running towards danger is part of the job, but being assaulted is not,” said SPC Capener. “I welcome the sentence and the court’s clear message that attacking emergency workers is unacceptable.”

Chief Inspector Emma Nicol praised the officers’ restraint and bravery. “This cowardly attack on someone simply doing their job is shocking. Moriarty’s custodial sentence sends a strong message. Officers put themselves in harm’s way every day to protect the public.”

Assaults on Officers Alarmingly Common

Bedfordshire Police report nearly 30 officer assaults each month. To support victims, the force runs the ‘Maggie’s Law’ initiative, named after PC Jon Henry’s daughter. Every assaulted officer is contacted by a senior officer and offered enhanced welfare support.
