A man in his 40s has been apprehended on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter in connection with the tragic death of Gogglebox star George Gilbey.
Essex Police revealed that the 40-year-old reality TV personality is believed to have passed away following an incident at his workplace.
Gilbey gained prominence for his appearances on the popular Channel 4 series Gogglebox, where he offered witty commentary on TV shows alongside his mother Linda McGarry and stepfather Pete McGarry. Pete sadly passed away in 2021 at the age of 71.
In addition to his Gogglebox fame, Gilbey also participated in the 14th series of Celebrity Big Brother in 2014, making it to the final.
An Essex Police spokesperson provided insights into the ongoing investigation, stating, “As part of our ongoing investigation into the death of a man in Campfield Road, Shoebury, we have arrested a man in their 40s from the Witham area on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.
The spokesperson continued, “This is a joint investigation with the Health and Safety Executive and our inquiries are ongoing.
Previously, Essex Police responded to an incident in Southend-on-Sea on Wednesday around 10 am, where Gilbey tragically lost his life. Reports indicated that Gilbey, who was working at height, suffered a fatal fall and succumbed to his injuries despite efforts by emergency responders.
George Gilbey, hailing from Essex, first joined Gogglebox in its second series in 2013. However, the family was temporarily dropped from the show in 2014 when Gilbey participated in Celebrity Big Brother. They later returned to the series.
A spokesperson for Gogglebox extended condolences, stating, “George was part of the Gogglebox family for eight series alongside his mum Linda and stepdad Pete. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Linda and George’s family and friends at this sorrowful time. The family has asked for privacy.”
Gilbey’s stint on the Channel 5 version of Celebrity Big Brother featured him alongside other notable personalities such as The Hills star Stephanie Pratt and American actor Gary Busey, who emerged as the series’ victor.
