Severe Storms Set to Slam Southern Plains and Great Lakes
Millions of Americans are on edge tonight as a major tornado outbreak barrels across 10 states. Fierce thunderstorms will roar from the Southern Plains into the Southern Great Lakes between 4pm and 6pm CT, meteorologists warn.
The states in the firing line include Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Iowa, Texas, Oklahoma, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Tennessee.
Storm Prediction Centre Sounds Dire Alarm
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a stark warning: “All severe hazards are possible, including the risk for a few strong to intense tornadoes and very large hail.”
SPC urges residents to identify their safest shelter spot NOW at home, work, or school. Nearly 80 million Americans face this brutal onslaught. The worst danger zones? Northern and central Illinois, stretching into northwest Indiana, where a Moderate Risk alert — the second highest on SPC’s scale — is in effect.
Forecasters warn tornadoes could unleash EF2 to EF3 fury with winds exceeding 110mph. Multiple powerful twisters could touch down tonight.
Night-Time Tornadoes Spell Double Trouble
This could be the largest outbreak of severe weather so far this year.
A deadly cocktail of a strong low-level jet, warm moist air, and fierce wind shear will fuel rotating supercell thunderstorms tonight.
Night-time tornadoes are twice as deadly as daytime twisters, according to NOAA, catching many off-guard while asleep.
AccuWeather’s Alex Sosnowski warned: “All it takes is one tornado hitting a populated area to cause multiple casualties. This threat must be taken seriously.”
Stay Alert: How to Prepare
- Severe storms will cluster overnight, sweeping across the Midwest and Ohio Valley.
- Additional storm cells may ignite from Oklahoma and Kansas into Missouri late tonight, threatening hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes.
- Ensure multiple ways to receive weather alerts and be ready to seek shelter immediately if warnings sound.
This vast tornado threat spans from Texas and Oklahoma all the way through the Midwest and Great Lakes. The risk of widespread destruction is high. Stay glued to live updates—your safety depends on it.
