Today, in a demonstration of civic activism, hundreds of individuals convened at Barclays Bank on North Street in Brighton. Their aim was to voice their concerns and demand action regarding the bank’s alleged involvement in supporting Israeli military operations against Palestinians. This event in Brighton is part of a nationwide ‘day of action,’ with similar protests organized outside 54 other Barclays branches.
According to the organisers, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, their research has uncovered extensive financial ties between Barclays Bank and several arms manufacturers. They claim that Barclays holds over £1 billion in shares and provides more than £3 billion in loans and underwriting to nine companies. These companies allegedly supply weapons, components, and military technology used by Israel in its operations against Palestinians.
A focal point of the protest was the bank’s alleged dealings with General Dynamics and Elbit Systems. General Dynamics is known for producing gun systems for fighter jets, which, according to the protesters, are used by Israel in Gaza. Elbit Systems is accused of supplying armoured drones, munitions, and artillery weapons to the Israeli military.
