Hundreds Take on Barclays Over Ties to Israeli Arms Firm
Brighton saw a storm of protest today as hundreds gathered outside Barclays Bank on North Street. Demonstrators slammed the banking giant for allegedly funding Israeli military operations against Palestinians. This was one stop on a nationwide day of action, hitting 54 other Barclays branches across the UK.
Barclays Accused of Funding Conflict
Protesters targeted Barclays’ financial links to General Dynamics and Elbit Systems—two arms firms accused of supplying Israel’s military weapons. General Dynamics produces gun systems for fighter jets reportedly used over Gaza. Elbit Systems provides armoured drones, munitions, and artillery to Israeli forces.
Campaigners Call for Boycott
The protesters claim Barclays’ money fuels the conflict, making the bank an uneasy accomplice. A spokesperson for the Palestine Solidarity Campaign said, “Barclays must end its grave complicity in Israel’s attacks on Palestinians. We urge concerned individuals to boycott all Barclays services until the bank divests from these companies.”
So far, Barclays has stayed silent on the accusations.
Protests Continue Across Brighton
After the Barclays rally, protesters marched through Brighton city centre heading towards Hove. A demonstration is planned on George Street to keep up the pressure.
