In a pivotal move, US President Joe Biden is set to travel to Israel this Wednesday, October 18, according to an announcement made by Secretary of State Antony Blinken in the early hours of Tuesday, October 17. The visit comes at a critical juncture as the humanitarian situation worsens in the Gaza Strip, with Israel contemplating a potential ground attack on the densely populated territory.
Blinken emphasised the significance of Biden’s visit, stating that it will reaffirm the United States’s solidarity with Israel during this crucial moment for the region and the world. The Secretary of State, who has engaged with leaders across the Middle East in the past week, highlighted that President Biden will make it clear that Israel has the right and duty to defend its people against threats from Hamas and other terrorist groups.
The announcement follows the recent deployment of two aircraft carrier groups and additional military assets to the region by President Biden, a move aimed at sending a “crystal clear” message to those seeking to exploit the conflict to attack Israel.
Blinken revealed that the visit is not only diplomatic but also strategic, as Biden will work closely with Israel to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas. The US and Israel have agreed to develop a plan facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid from donor nations and multilateral organisations to civilians in Gaza.
