Jump or Run? Offender’s Daring Escape Foiled by Keen Police in Tonbridge
Bobby Thorpe’s Second-Floor Leap Backfires
On the morning of Thursday 8 January 2026, officers from Tonbridge’s Community Safety Unit were out to arrest Bobby Thorpe. Faced with a series of offences, the 33-year-old refused officers entry to his home.
But Thorpe’s desperate bid to escape took a dramatic turn. While cops tried to force their way inside, a loud crash from outside caught their attention.
To everyone’s shock, Thorpe had jumped from a second-floor window. Broken tiles on a nearby garage confirmed his high-risk stunt.
PC Ben Cooper’s Lightning-Fast Pursuit
PC Ben Cooper didn’t hesitate. He vaulted a fence and gave chase. Despite Thorpe’s head start, members of the public helped by shouting directions.
The suspect sprinted onto a main road and then ducked into a random garden.
But PC Cooper was right behind. Climbing a gate, he spotted Thorpe hiding in a corner.
In less than 80 seconds after his leap, Thorpe was back in handcuffs.
Chief Inspector Praises Officers’ Dedication
“Everyday, police officers go above and beyond to catch offenders and keep the public safe,” said Chief Inspector Mark Stubberfield.
“Despite their initial disbelief, officers acted quickly to arrest Thorpe in just over a minute.”
“In January alone, we achieved a 73.9% solve rate for shoplifting in Tonbridge and Malling — proof of our commitment to tackling local crime.”
“This arrest is a prime example of the lengths officers go to. I’m incredibly proud of them all.”
Offender Faces Jail Time
Bobby Thorpe, from Royal West Kent Avenue, Tonbridge, didn’t get far after his daring escape attempt. He was sentenced to 36 weeks in prison for theft, handling stolen goods, and fraud.
