A ruthless gang of car key burglars behind nearly £3.5 million worth of car thefts has been locked up for a whopping 94 years combined. West Mercia Police led one of their biggest conspiracy probes, cracking down on the criminals who terrorised the Midlands, southern England, and Wales.
High-End Heists Across Eight Police Areas
Eleven members of the organised crime group pleaded guilty to a spree of high-value burglaries between May and August 2024. The heist, dubbed Operation Flare, uncovered almost 100 stolen vehicles, including top-end BMWs, Audis, Land Rovers, and Range Rovers, some valued over £100,000 each. The gang’s MO was brazen. They broke into homes to nab car keys, used bleach to wipe out forensic evidence, then sold the shiny rides on the black market or stripped them down in illicit chop shops—the full damage, factoring stolen jewellery and cash plus wrecked properties, hit around £3.67 million.
Victims Left Traumatised as Gang Lives Large on Social
Gang members often sported balaclavas and didn’t shy from confronting victims — including the elderly and families with young kids. Many victims were so traumatised they had to leave their own homes. Detectives uncovered the offenders boasting about their crimes on WhatsApp and Snapchat, showing off footage of them scouting targets and speeding through the streets at over 160mph.

“Your crimes had a terrible and long-lasting impact,” – His Honour Judge Andrew Lockhart KC
Judge Lockhart told the defendants they struck “at the heart of society,” causing harm that drove some victims from their homes. Detective Constable Simon Lloyd added that the gang not only stole vehicles worth millions but also wrecked homes and left lasting emotional scars. Operation Flare is officially West Mercia Police’s largest conspiracy investigation on record — probing over 130 offences in one of the shadiest car theft rings seen in years.
