Man Charged After M27 Mental Health Incident Sparks Public Outrage

Police have charged Dean Williams, 28, after a dramatic incident on the M27 on Friday evening, August 27. The move has sparked a furious backlash from the public, who say Williams, who is believed to be struggling with mental health issues, should have been offered support — not court.

What Happened on the M27?

Officers were called to Botley Road Bridge around 3.30pm following reports expressing concern for a man’s welfare. The motorway was shut between junctions 8 and 9 for several hours as emergency services dealt with the situation.

After a thorough investigation, police charged Mr Williams, who has no fixed address, with causing danger to road users. He is set to appear before Portsmouth Magistrates on Tuesday, August 31.

Public Slams Police for Charging Distressed Man

Social media exploded with condemnation. One commenter wrote, “Wow .. someone is desperate enough to think of taking their own life and you charge him !!!!!! Shame .. he needs help not conviction …. disgusted isn’t the word …”

Another added, “So he’s being punished for possibly trying to kill himself as if he wasn’t at the darkest, lowest point in his life. Some clever clogs thought it best to arrest him. Sorry but this is totally bang out of order.”

Further outrage came from users upset at Williams being named publicly, with one sarcastically remarking, “Great 1.”

Comments like, “Wow, this is so so wrong. Even if he had no intention of taking his life, he clearly has mental health issues and needs help, not a court charge!” summed up the public mood.

Calls for Mental Health Support, Not Criminal Charges

This case highlights ongoing concerns about handling mental health crises. Many argue that individuals in distress need compassion and care — not criminal prosecution.

The incident on the M27 has reignited calls for better mental health support on the frontline and for police forces to liaise with healthcare providers rather than default to charges.
