Crimea on Edge After Ukrainian Drone Strikes Ammo Depot
Crimea, Moscow’s annexed hotspot, erupted in chaos after a Ukrainian drone blasted an ammunition depot on Saturday. This attack comes just five days after drones damaged Russia’s symbolic Kerch Strait bridge, escalating the conflict in the region.
Kyiv’s Bold Push to Retake Crimea
Since Russia grabbed Crimea in 2014, it’s been a flashpoint in the 17-month Ukraine war. Now, Kyiv is turning up the heat with a fierce counteroffensive. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made no secret of his plans at the Aspen Security Forum, vowing to reclaim Crimea. He called the Crimea bridge, inaugurated by Vladimir Putin in 2018, an “enemy object” that must be “neutralized.”
Evacuations and Rail Halted Amid Smokescreens
The recent drone strike hit an ammo depot in Crimea’s Krasnogvardeisky district, sparking evacuations within a five-kilometre radius, ordered by the Moscow-backed head, Sergei Aksyonov. Rail services ground to a halt as a safety precaution.
Despite Aksyonov’s claims of minimal damage and zero casualties, social media videos showed thick smoke rising from the blast site. Meanwhile, traffic over the crucial Crimea bridge only resumed after swift repairs from the last Ukrainian attack, with flights still suspended due to the ongoing war.
Black Sea Tensions Rise as Russia Quits Grain Deal
Western allies are on edge, fearing this clash could spiral out of control. Russia’s withdrawal from the vital grain corridor deal, which guaranteed safe shipping to Ukraine, adds fuel to the fire. Kyiv is scrambling to open alternative grain routes and has urged the UN and neighbours for joint patrols to secure cargo passage.
Cluster Bomb Controversy and Frontline Clashes
Military tensions remain sky-high. Moscow claims it repelled three Ukrainian attacks in eastern villages. Russia also accused Kyiv of unleashing cluster munitions on the border village of Zhuravlevka, drawing global condemnation. The US faced backlash for supplying these controversial weapons, with President Biden’s support ramping up the stakes.
“If Ukraine keeps using cluster munitions, Moscow has enough to respond in kind,” warned Putin, signalling a dangerous new chapter in the conflict.
