A Metrolink tram derailed near Piccadilly tram stop in Manchester on 5 April 2026. Fortunately, nobody was hurt, and the damage was minor.
What Happened?
At 1.39pm, a two-set tram running from Ashton to Bury came off the tracks while approaching the Piccadilly stop. Travelling at just 8 mph, one axle’s wheels left the rails. The driver didn’t notice and carried the tram into the stop where passengers safely got off.
Investigation Underway
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch is probing the incident to uncover exactly why the derailment happened. Their inquiry will examine:
- The design, upkeep, and management of the track
- The tram’s design and maintenance
- How the tram was operated at the time
- Any other factors that may have contributed
This probe is totally independent from investigations by both the tram industry and the Office of Rail and Road (ORR).
