Tragic Incident Shuts Police Station Front Desk
A shocking event unfolded at Stoke Newington Police Station on Saturday night, forcing the closure of the front desk. A 68-year-old man climbed atop a telephone kiosk inside the station’s front office and jumped down, suffering critical injuries.
Man Dies at Scene Despite Emergency Efforts
Despite frantic attempts by officers and emergency crews, the man died at the scene. The Metropolitan Police confirmed he was not detained or brought into custody at any point. In fact, he had been freely coming and going from the station since 9 a.m., without making contact with the police.
Investigation Underway But No Suspicion on Man
The force’s Directorate of Professional Standards is now examining the incident. A note was found at the scene, and a report will be sent to the coroner. Authorities have informed the man’s next of kin. A police cordon was set up, and the station remained closed from just before 7 p.m.
Hackney Police stressed the man entered the station of his own will and was never apprehended. They added, “The circumstances are being investigated. The next of kin is not under investigation.”
