Jordan McSweeney, convicted of stalking and brutally murdering Zara Aleena, has scored a legal win. The Court of Appeal slashed his minimum jail term from 38 to 33 years.
Judges Slam Sentencing for Being ‘Excessive’
On Friday, a panel of three judges slammed the original sentencing judge for handing down what they called an overly harsh “uplift” to McSweeney’s minimum sentence. They decided a 33-year minimum term was more appropriate.
Horrific Attack Shocks London
McSweeney, 35, admitted murder and sexual assault but shockingly snubbed his sentencing hearing last December. Zara Aleena was viciously attacked as she walked home from a night out in east London on June 26, 2022.
The savage assault lasted nine minutes on Cranbrook Road, Ilford, leaving Zara with 46 separate injuries. McSweeney had only been out of prison on licence for nine days before the attack. He has a disturbing history of stalking with at least five known victims.
Legal Arguments Fuel Sentence Debate
McSweeney’s barrister, George Carter-Stephenson KC, argued the sentencing judge, Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb, wrongly counted “aggravating features” that boosted the sentence.
The ruling has reignited fierce debates over whether sentences for brutal crimes are tough enough, sparking fresh concerns for victims fighting for justice.
