Ex-Met PC Caught Out Over Racist Rant at Work Meeting
Former PC Thomas Murray, once with the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command (PaDP), has been slammed for breaching professional conduct with racist remarks. The bombshell voice note was accidentally broadcast during a team meeting, forcing Murray to quit the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS).
Offensive Voice Note Heard by All at Seminar
On September 8, 2022, Murray sent a voice message packed with offensive, racially discriminatory comments to a colleague. The recipient was attending a positive action seminar on Microsoft Teams designed to support under-represented groups aiming for promotions within the force.
But fate wasn’t on Murray’s side. He forgot to mute his mic when playing the message, making the foul words audible to everyone in the session.
Independent Panel Would Have Sacked Him
An independent panel — led by a neutral chair — found that had Murray remained serving, he would have been dismissed outright for his behaviour.
“There is no place in the Met for people who hold such attitudes,” said Commander Simon Messinger, head of PaDP. “We will continue to identify those who do not adhere to our values and work to dismiss them from the organisation.”
Murray Resigns; Barred from Policing for Life
Following the scandal, Murray resigned in October 2023. He is also set to be added to the College of Policing’s Barred List, banning him for life from working for any police force, local policing body, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, or His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services.
This harsh move sends a clear message: racist attitudes have no place in UK policing.
