Barnsley Man Jailed for Terror and Child Abuse Offences

A 31-year-old man from Barnsley was sentenced today to two-and-a-half years behind bars plus one year on licence for terrorism and indecent image offences. Ryan Jackson of Wath Road, Brampton, also faces a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Extremist Telegram Group Uncovered

Jackson was arrested in July 2021 during a crackdown on an online right-wing extremist Telegram chat. The group spread racist propaganda, violent terror manuals, and hateful rhetoric. Linked probes have already landed six other members with over 40 years in prison for terrorism and firearms crimes.

Police Seize Digital Evidence of Horrific Crimes

A detailed search of Jackson’s home uncovered 25 digital devices. Experts found he had amassed over 900 indecent images of children and more than 200 extreme pornographic images involving animals. He also collected and shared terrorist publications in the Telegram chat.

Charges and Guilty Pleas

Jackson pleaded guilty to multiple offences including:

  • Five counts of collecting or making records useful for terrorism (Terrorism Act 2000)
  • Dissemination of terrorist publications (Terrorism Act 2006)
  • Three offences of making indecent photographs of children (Protection of Children Act 1978)
  • Possession of prohibited images of children (Coroners and Justice Act 2009)
  • Possession of extreme pornographic images (Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008)

Counter Terror Chief Issues Warning

“This case shows the serious consequences of online extremist behaviour and the real-world danger it poses,” said Detective Chief Superintendent James Dunkerley, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing North East. “We urge anyone who spots extreme material online to report it immediately so action can be taken.”
