Shocking Attack on 75-Year-Old Widower Lands Brutal Attacker Behind Bars
Nicholas Armstrong, 50, has been locked up for 18 years after savagely assaulting a 75-year-old widower in his own Blackburn home. The terrifying ordeal unfolded in November 2023 and has left the local community reeling at the sheer brutality.
Assailant Smashes Victim with Fire Extinguisher
Armstrong, who has no fixed address, broke into the elderly man’s house and repeatedly struck him over the head with a fire extinguisher. The attack raged throughout the victim’s home before Armstrong stole cash and bank cards from his trousers. He then used the stolen cards to make purchases at nearby shops, adding insult to injury.
Victim’s Remarkable Fight for Survival
The 75-year-old showed incredible strength, managing to drive himself to hospital despite his severe injuries. He spent six weeks in medical care but now suffers from memory loss and cannot recall the attack or identify his attacker.
Justice Served: Dangerous Offender Sentenced
Blackburn CID’s investigation led to Armstrong’s arrest on 16 November 2023. Charged with Section 18 wounding, he faced the judge who branded him a dangerous offender. Armstrong was handed a 13-year prison term plus five years on extended license due to the high risk he poses to the public.
“I am pleased that the sentence handed down to Armstrong is a significant one, reflective of the severity of the offence, the danger that he presents to innocent members of the public, and the vulnerability of the victim upon whom this brutal and mindless attack was inflicted,” said DC Jack Greenhalgh of Blackburn CID.
The local community has praised the victim’s courage and resilience, rallying behind him as he continues to recover from the physical and psychological scars more than eight months on.
This horrendous case highlights the urgent need to tackle growing violence against vulnerable elderly citizens and the vital role police and community support play in keeping them safe.
