Hundreds Pay Tearful Tribute to Southport Stabbing Victim Elsie, 7
Hundreds gathered today to say goodbye to seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, tragically killed in last month’s Southport stabbings. The community came together in a moving funeral procession through Birkdale, with Elsie’s tiny coffin carried in a horse-drawn carriage.
Heartbreaking Funeral Filled with Colour and Love
Elsie’s parents, Jenni and David, followed closely behind as the carriage made its way to St John’s Church, where Elsie had been christened. The hearse was decorated with rainbows, reflecting the vibrant spirit of the young girl.
Mourners lined the streets — family, friends, and her cheerleading team — many wearing bright colours as requested rather than traditional black. Pink ribbons adorned lampposts, celebrating Elsie’s life rather than mourning her loss.
Tributes Highlight Elsie’s Sparkling Personality
Inside the packed church, pallbearers carried Elsie’s multicoloured coffin draped in a light shroud. Some wore Taylor Swift bracelets in honour of Elsie’s favourite singer. The atmosphere was a mix of somber reflection and heartfelt celebration.
“She truly was one of a kind,” said Elsie’s former teacher Katie Sykes, recalling the “sassy” girl who loved sparkly nail varnish and brightened every classroom.
Friends remembered Elsie as a cheerful cheerleader with the “prettiest socks and shiniest shoes.” The service ended with a solo performance of Taylor Swift’s Love Story, Elsie’s favourite song, as the family followed her coffin out in tears.
Community Shows Unwavering Support After Tragic Attack
In a poignant display, a line of Post Office vans — from Elsie’s father’s workplace — followed the hearse through Southport. Her cheer group, Vortex Cheer, formed a guard of honour as the coffin entered the church.
Elsie died along with six-year-old Bebe King and nine-year-old Alice da Silva Aguiar after an attacker struck during a Taylor Swift-themed holiday club last month. The tragedy has devastated the Southport community.
As bubbles floated through the air and Dancing in the Sky played softly, mourners remembered Elsie’s bright, loving spirit — a little girl taken too soon but forever in their hearts.
