Four Dead in Georgia School Massacre – Shooter a 14-Year-Old Student
Tragedy struck Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on Wednesday morning when a 14-year-old student opened fire, killing four people and injuring nine more. The brutal attack left two teachers and two students dead, shaking the small community to its core.
Victims and Shooter Identified
Authorities confirmed the victims as teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie, along with students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo. Nine others – eight students and a teacher – were rushed to hospital.
The suspect, Colt Gray, also 14, surrendered to police just minutes after the shooting began. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said Gray will face murder charges and be tried as an adult. The weapon was an AR-style rifle, though it’s unclear if any victims were specifically targeted.
Eyewitnesses Describe ‘Terror’ Inside the School
Students and teachers recounted terrifying scenes. 17-year-old senior Sergio Caldera said, “We heard screams from outside as we huddled up” in chemistry class before evacuating to the football field.
Another student, Kyson Stancion, shared, “Everybody was crying,” as police ordered classrooms locked down amid the chaos.
Community and Leaders Rally Amidst Horror
Emotional parents flocked to the school anxiously searching for their children. Police officer and father Jonathan Mills described the ordeal of confirming his 11-year-old son’s safety: “You never think about that.”
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris condemned the attack, with Biden calling gun violence a “plague” and demanding lawmakers pass common-sense gun safety laws, including assault weapon bans.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp cancelled plans in Las Vegas to return home and support the community, expressing deep heartbreak over the shooting.
Ongoing Investigation and Safety Measures
Barrow County Schools will stay closed through the week as investigators continue their work. Extra police patrols are being stationed in schools across the region to boost security.
