Dickson Ndiema, the man accused of fatally burning Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei, has died in hospital. Ndiema passed away at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, on Monday night after suffering from severe burns that covered over 30% of his body. He had been under intensive care following the incident.
The tragic event, which resulted in Cheptegei’s death, reportedly stemmed from a land dispute between the two former partners. Ndiema allegedly doused Cheptegei with petrol and set her alight, leading to severe injuries that caused her death last Thursday. Cheptegei had competed in the marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics, finishing 44th, and had been regarded as a rising star in Uganda’s athletics community.
Rebecca Cheptegei’s passing marks a tragic end to a promising athletic career. She had gained recognition for her performances in long-distance running, particularly after her strong showing in the Discovery 10km road race in Kapchorwa, Uganda, in 2023.
