Israel Launches Targeted Ground Operation Against Hezbollah in Lebanon

The Israeli military has confirmed that its ground forces, backed by the air force, have launched an operation named “Northern Arrows” against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) described the mission as a “targeted ground operation” aimed at Hezbollah targets located in villages near the Israeli border, which the military claims pose an immediate threat to communities in northern Israel.

The operation, which began on Monday evening, involves Israeli ground troops entering Lebanon in what the IDF has described as “localized and targeted raids.” These ground operations are being supported by artillery and airstrikes in response to ongoing hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel that began after the attacks by Hamas on Israel.

In addition to the ground operations, the IDF has conducted airstrikes targeting several Hezbollah facilities, including three warehouses near Beirut Airport over the weekend. Satellite imagery from Planet Labs showed significant damage to these structures, but it remains unclear what they were being used for.

Hezbollah and Israel have traded fire across the Lebanon-Israel border for weeks. Israeli airstrikes in Beirut have focused on the southern suburbs of Dahieh, an area known for its strong Hezbollah presence. Residents in the area have been instructed to evacuate as the conflict continues to escalate.

Lebanon’s health ministry reported that Israeli airstrikes across the country on Monday killed at least 95 people and injured 172. The strikes targeted areas in southern Lebanon, Nabatieh, Bekaa, Baalbek-Hermel, and the capital, Beirut.

Hezbollah has also continued its offensive, firing rockets across the border into northern Israel. The IDF stated that around ten rockets from southern Lebanon were intercepted by their defence systems, while others landed in open areas. Hezbollah has issued statements claiming that it is targeting Israeli troop movements in northern Israel and has reported “confirmed hits” on these targets.

UK Evacuates British Nationals from Lebanon

As tensions escalate, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has chartered an evacuation flight for British citizens and their families wishing to leave Lebanon. The flight is set to depart Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport on Wednesday, with priority given to vulnerable individuals. Foreign Secretary David Lammy stressed that the situation in Lebanon is volatile and urged British nationals to leave as soon as possible.

Fleeing Lebanon

Reports indicate that more than 100,000 people have fled Lebanon to neighboring Syria due to the ongoing conflict. Many refugees have described the situation as dire, with civilians being targeted in the airstrikes. Some expressed their belief that it is now safer to return to Syria, despite the country’s own ongoing security issues.

The IDF has also acknowledged that this targeted operation could continue depending on the situation on the ground and will be conducted alongside military efforts in Gaza and other areas. The U.S. was notified of Israel’s intention to carry out a limited ground incursion in Lebanon, with American officials noting that the scope of the operation is expected to remain constrained.

The escalation of violence between Israel and Hezbollah marks a significant increase in regional hostilities, with many fearing that the conflict could spiral into a wider war across the Middle East. The UK, U.S., and other international actors continue to call for de-escalation, while tensions between Israel and Hezbollah show no signs of abating.
