The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has elected Steve Wright as its new general secretary, defeating longstanding leader Matt Wrack in a closely contested election, the union announced today.
Mr. Wright, who previously served as vice-president of the FBU, secured 5,188 votes, compared to 3,436 for Mr. Wrack, in a vote that saw a 29% turnout among union members.
End of an Era for Matt Wrack
Mr. Wrack had been seeking another term after leading the FBU for two decades, navigating pay disputes, job cuts, and union rights battles under successive governments.
Reflecting on his tenure, Mr. Wrack stated:
“We have fought back against attacks on the fire service and we have laid the ground for real progress.”
He noted that during his time as general secretary, the FBU successfully fought for higher wages, securing a 16% pay rise over the past three years without additional conditions. He also highlighted significant gains in maternity pay and pension disputes, including a £19 billion settlement for public sector workers.
Additionally, Mr. Wrack played a key role in pushing for new national fire service standards and advised ministers on fire safety policies.
Legacy of Industrial Action and Workers’ Rights
Under Wrack’s leadership, the FBU carried out the longest strike action in its history over pension reforms between 2013-2015, while also campaigning for the repeal of anti-union laws that restricted firefighters’ ability to strike.
He also served as president of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), where he became a vocal advocate for workers’ rights and improved labor conditions under the Labour government.
Looking Ahead: Steve Wright Takes the Helm
As incoming general secretary, Steve Wright is expected to continue the union’s campaign for fair pay, improved working conditions, and fire service reforms. His election marks a significant change in leadership direction, with union members opting for a fresh approach to ongoing challenges in the fire and rescue sector.
The FBU is set to play a crucial role in shaping government policy on firefighter safety, employment rights, and fire service funding in the coming years.
