Police Air Support Gets a High-Flying Upgrade
NPAS Orders Seven Cutting-Edge Airbus Helicopters
UK police fans and Facebook users alike can celebrate. The National Police Air Service (NPAS) has placed a fresh order for seven brand-new Airbus H135 helicopters. This move is part of a major fleet modernisation announced on 12 March 2025, kicking off a complete revamp to keep airborne policing sharp and ready.
The deal, secured via a Framework Contract with BlueLight Commercial, names Airbus Helicopters as the exclusive supplier for NPAS for up to six years.
New Choppers to Replace Ageing Fleet by 2027
The seven slick H135 aircraft will start arriving in 2027, replacing the current fleet that’s been flying crime and rescue missions for over 13 years. These bird’s eye view machines are vital, with NPAS answering over 100 air support calls daily.
“With over 100 calls for air support each day, the National Police Air Service plays a unique and valuable role in saving lives, disrupting criminality and protecting communities,” said NPAS Chief Superintendent Vicki White. “We look forward to working with Airbus on this exciting project and expect our first new aircraft in 2027.”
Equipped with Airbus’ cutting-edge Helionix avionics system, the new helicopters promise better safety and reduced pilot workload. One will even serve as a training bird to ease pilots into the new tech.
Airbus: The Trusted Partner in Skies
Airbus Helicopters has been NPAS’ one and only helicopter supplier since the service began. They’re proud to continue the partnership with this fresh contract.
“We’re honoured to remain sole provider of NPAS helicopters and play a critical role in national security,” said Richard Atack, Interim Managing Director of Airbus Helicopters UK.
NPAS: Eyes in the Sky Across England and Wales
NPAS currently flies 16 H135s and four H145s, operating from 14 air bases to support 43 police forces across England and Wales. These are some of the world’s hardest-working police helicopters, with Airbus UK handling day-to-day maintenance.
New choppers will boost NPAS’ vital duties, including search and rescue, pursuit tracking, crime disruption, and responding to major incidents.
Airbus H135: A Global Powerhouse in Policing
The Airbus H135 has a proven track record worldwide. Over 1,440 of these versatile helicopters are in service, logging more than 7.5 million flight hours and serving over 320 customers globally.
This upgrade is a crucial part of the UK’s ongoing investment in high-tech policing, helping keep communities safer from above.
