Flooding After Record Rainfall

The closure occurred after a month’s worth of rainfall fell in less than 48 hours, overwhelming the area and even flooding a local pumping station. A fleet of 25 tankers has been working continuously to pump out an estimated 60 million litres of water, which reached depths of up to 8 feet at its peak.

Martin Fellows, Regional Director for National Highways in the East of England, stated: “We are taking every possible measure to tackle this unprecedented situation and get the roads open as soon as possible. However, the record rainfall has made this a challenging operation, and it may take several more days to resolve the issue safely.”

Efforts to Control Flooding

National Highways, in partnership with Bedfordshire Local Resilience Forum (BLRF), is continuing its efforts to control the flooding and ensure public safety. The BLRF, which includes local authorities, emergency services, and the Environment Agency, has been working closely to manage the situation and coordinate the flood response across the county.

Mr. Fellows added: “I understand people are curious and want to visit the area, but I kindly request that the public stay away from the site so our work can progress quickly.”

Investigation and Repair

Once all the floodwater has been removed, an investigation will be conducted to assess any potential damage to the road surface and determine the necessary repair work. Until then, motorists are urged to use the diversion routes provided and avoid the affected area.
