The A102 Blackwall Tunnel northbound has been closed this afternoon following an obstruction on the road, causing significant disruption and long queues of traffic between Greenwich and Poplar.
Transport for London (TfL) confirmed that the northbound tunnel was shut after reports of a blockage inside the tunnel. Emergency services are currently on the scene assessing the situation and working to clear the obstruction.
Motorists heading northbound are experiencing heavy congestion with tailbacks forming along the A102 and surrounding routes. Traffic is queueing in both directions as a result of the closure, with delays expected to continue into the evening rush hour.
A TfL spokesperson advised:
“Due to an obstruction in the northbound Blackwall Tunnel, the tunnel is currently closed. Drivers are urged to avoid the area where possible and seek alternative routes. We are working with emergency services to reopen the tunnel as soon as it is safe to do so.”
Bus services operating between south and east London have also been affected, with some routes diverted or experiencing delays.
Drivers are urged to check travel updates before setting off and consider using the Woolwich Ferry or Rotherhithe Tunnel as alternate river crossings, though delays are expected on these routes due to increased traffic.
More updates will follow as the situation develops.
