International R&B singer Chris Brown has been denied bail and remanded in custody by a Manchester judge over a serious grievous bodily harm (GBH) charge relating to an incident in London in 2023.
The 36-year-old Grammy Award-winning artist appeared in court on Friday, 16 May, charged with causing GBH with intent following an alleged assault that occurred on Sunday, 19 February 2023, at a venue in Hanover Square, Mayfair, central London.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Brown was arrested in the early hours of Thursday, 15 May, at a five-star hotel in Manchester after arriving in the UK ahead of his summer tour. His arrest was carried out by Metropolitan Police detectives, who travelled to the city to execute the warrant.
He will remain in custody until his next court appearance scheduled for 13 June 2025.
Background of the Case
The alleged victim, believed to be a music producer, sustained injuries requiring hospital treatment after an altercation during a nightclub event in 2023.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has confirmed the charge under Section 18 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
Brown has not yet entered a plea.
Public and Legal Response
The Metropolitan Police stated:
“A 36-year-old man was arrested in Manchester on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. He was charged and remanded in custody to appear at court.”
Legal experts anticipate a high-profile trial, given Brown’s celebrity status and upcoming UK tour dates.
Impact on Tour
The developments cast doubt on the singer’s UK and European tour, set to begin in June. His Manchester performance was scheduled for 15 June at Co-Op Live Arena. No announcement has yet been made by Brown’s management regarding cancellations or refunds.
