Emergency services have called to Westminster Bridge this evening following reports of a person experiencing a mental health crisis and threatening to jump into the River Thames.
At approximately 7:15 PM, police, paramedics, and specialist negotiators rushed to the scene near where they found an individual in distress on the bridge.
The City of Police confirmed that they have closed Westminster Bridge in both directions to ensure public safety and allow emergency responders to engage with the person.
The London Fire Brigade Rescue Boat is also reported to be in attendance, working alongside mental health professionals to try to de-escalate the situation and offer support to the individual.
Metropolitan Police source said, “We are currently responding to a mental health crisis on Westminster Bridge. Specialist officers are on the scene and are engaging with the individual. We ask the public to avoid the area and thank everyone for their patience as we work to resolve this incident safely.
The closure of the iconic bridge has led to significant traffic congestion in central London, with delays reported around Parliament Square, Lambeth Bridge, and the South Bank. Transport for London (TfL) has advised drivers to avoid the area and seek alternative routes. Several bus routes that cross Westminster Bridge have been diverted.
Witnesses described a heavy emergency presence, with police cordoning off the area and paramedics on standby. One bystander said, “It was quite distressing to see, but the police seemed very calm and were doing everything they could to help.”
Mental health support organizations have expressed their concern and highlighted the importance of community awareness and compassion in such situations.
This is a developing story, and more updates will be provided as the situation unfolds.
