A fraudster posing as a registered nurse has been locked up for ripping off the NHS to the tune of nearly £173,000.
Impostor Snags Nursing Job Using Stolen Identity
Ashton Guramatunhu, 46, from Dudley, duped a nursing agency in Warrington by stealing the identity of a real nurse back in late 2014. Using this fake ID, he landed work at six care homes across northeast England over four years.
Fraud Uncovered After Real Nurse Gets Suspicious
His scam finally unraveled in January 2019 when the authentic nurse was contacted by the Nursing and Midwifery Council about an incident at a care home he never worked at. Cleveland Police launched an investigation which later moved to Cheshire Police after Guramatunhu’s Warrington registration was revealed.
Jail Time for Sham Healthcare Worker
At Liverpool Crown Court on 2 December, Guramatunhu pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation and was sentenced to 40 months behind bars for his healthcare fraud.
“Between January 2015 and April 2019, Guramatunhu earned £172,920.94 through his fraudulent activity,” the court heard.
