Fake Nurse Jailed for NHS Scam Worth Nearly £173,000
A confidence trickster posing as a registered nurse has been sentenced to prison for fleecing the NHS out of almost £173,000.
Impostor Lands Nursing Job with Stolen Identity
Ashton Guramatunhu, 46, from Dudley, hoodwinked a nursing agency in Warrington back in 2014. Using the identity of a real nurse, he secured shifts at six care homes across northeast England — carrying on the con for four years.
Fraud Uncovered When Real Nurse Spots the Scam
The ruse crumbled in January 2019 after the genuine nurse was contacted by the Nursing and Midwifery Council about an incident at a care home he never worked at. An investigation by Cleveland Police kicked off, then passed to Cheshire Police once Guramatunhu’s Warrington registration came to light.
Forty Months Inside for Sham Healthcare Worker
At Liverpool Crown Court on 2 December, Guramatunhu admitted fraud by false representation. He was slapped with a 40-month jail sentence for deceiving the NHS.
“Between January 2015 and April 2019, Guramatunhu earned £172,920.94 through his fraudulent activity,” the court heard.
