Industry experts are urging the government to provide subsidies for safe e-bikes in response to the risks posed by unregulated batteries – UKNIP

This call comes after a tragic incident in Cambridge where a family died in a flat fire that was likely caused by a charging electric bike. Gemma Germeney, 31, along with her children Lilly Peden, 8, and Oliver Peden, 4, lost their lives in the fire. Another man remains in critical condition.

Francesco Mazzella, the CEO of Talio, a manufacturer and seller of e-bikes in the UK and Europe, emphasized the need for safety in e-bike purchases. He highlighted the affordability factor that leads many people to buy cheaper bikes online, despite the potential risks associated with such products. Import controls on batteries are being called for, particularly for those purchased online from countries with less stringent safety regulations.
