Kent Police Seize Over 40 Vehicles in Drive Insured Campaign

Kent Police’s Roads Policing Unit (RPU) has seized more than 40 vehicles in the first four days of a week-long national Drive Insured campaign, targeting uninsured drivers and raising awareness about the significant costs they impose on the public.

Impact of Uninsured Drivers

Uninsured and hit-and-run drivers contribute to an average £53 increase in annual insurance premiums for law-abiding motorists, according to industry estimates. Additionally, uninsured driving is reported to cost the UK economy nearly £2.2 billion every year through accidents, compensation claims, and other expenses.

A Focused Campaign

The initiative, known as Operation Drive Insured, is a collaboration between law enforcement and insurers aimed at clamping down on those who fail to insure their vehicles, ensuring roads are safer for everyone. Officers across the country are conducting targeted operations using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology to identify uninsured vehicles.

Enforcement and Deterrence

Kent Police’s RPU shared an update on their progress via social media, stating:

“We have seized over 40 vehicles in the first four days of @DriveInsured’s week-long campaign. Uninsured and hit-and-run drivers cost law-abiding motorists an average of £53 in each insurance premium, and those who drive uninsured cost the UK economy almost £2.2 billion a year.”

Consequences for Offenders

Motorists caught driving uninsured face severe penalties, including:

  • A fixed penalty fine of £300
  • Six penalty points on their driving licence
  • Vehicle seizure and storage fees, often exceeding £200
  • In extreme cases, court appearances with fines up to £5,000 and potential disqualification.

Public Safety

The campaign aims to deter uninsured driving, ensuring safer roads for all. With over 40 vehicles already removed from the streets in Kent alone, authorities are emphasizing the importance of proper vehicle insurance and compliance with legal requirements.

Motorists are reminded to check their insurance policies and ensure their vehicles are appropriately covered. For more information, follow the hashtag #OpDriveInsured24 on social media.
