A major fire at a recycling site in Crete Hall Road, Northfleet, has prompted urgent public health warnings as heavy smoke continues to affect Gravesend town centre and parts of Tilbury in Essex.

The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Monday 26 May at around 2:08am, has required a large-scale response from Kent Fire and Rescue Service, with up to six fire engines, a bulk water carrier, and a command support unit deployed at the scene.

Public Health Warning in Effect

As of 8:10pm on Tuesday, 27 May, fire crews remain at the scene and are continuing to urge residents and those travelling through the affected areas to keep windows and doors closed due to a large plume of smoke.

The smoke is not only impacting Gravesend but also reaching across the Thames to Tilbury, within the Thurrock district of Essex. Authorities have advised residents in both areas to take precautions, particularly those with respiratory conditions or young children.
