Meat Cleaver Robber Jailed

Joe Page, a 34-year-old resident of St Michaels Road in Grimsby, has been sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to robbery and possession of a bladed article. Page’s crimes involved threatening shopkeepers with a meat cleaver during two separate incidents.

The first incident occurred on Sunday, October 22, 2023, around 7.30pm. Page entered a shop on Laceby Road and brandished a meat cleaver, intimidating the staff. As he attempted to empty the shop’s tills into his bag, a courageous staff member tackled him, disarming him in the process. Page fled the scene empty-handed, leaving behind the weapon and the bag of cash.

An investigation led officers to Page’s address, where they discovered distinctive clothing that he had worn during the offence. Some of the clothing was partially burnt outside the property. Further inquiries revealed that Page had also threatened individuals with a meat cleaver outside another shop on Laceby Road just two days prior.

Page appeared before Grimsby Crown Court on Friday, May 24, where he received his sentence. Detective Sergeant Andy Taylor, who led the investigation, praised the bravery of the staff member who disarmed Page. He emphasised that violent crime and robbery would not be tolerated, and the police would continue to seek justice for victims to ensure community safety.
