Teen Stabbed to Death in Penge Park Five Years Ago – Police Release New CCTV Snap

Brutal Attack on 17-Year-Old Shocks Local Community

Detectives are hunting for witnesses after the savage stabbing of 17-year-old Michael Jonas in Betts Park, Penge, back in November 2017. Michael was chased by a gang of up to six males before being stabbed multiple times and left dying alone in the park.

Emergency services were called shortly after 7.20pm on 2 November 2017. Officers found Michael with fatal stab wounds. Despite desperate attempts at first aid, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

New CCTV Image Could Crack Cold-Case

A post-mortem confirmed Michael died from stab wounds to the chest. The Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime Command launched an immediate murder investigation. Now, five years on, officers have released new CCTV footage showing a man with a backpack jogging away from Betts Park near the time of the murder.

Police stress this man is currently treated as a witness, but urge anyone who recognises him or was in the park at that time to come forward.

Detectives Plead for Witnesses to End Family’s Nightmare

“Michael was a much-loved young man with his whole life ahead of him before he was cruelly taken in such a violent way,” said Detective Chief Inspector Nigel Penney. “His family and friends miss him every day, and we are determined to provide some closure by catching those responsible.”

“We believe many people were in the park that evening. If you saw or heard anything – no matter how small – you could hold the missing piece to this puzzle. Please get in touch via 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers. All information will be treated confidentially.”

Michael’s family remains devastated after half a decade. Police renew their appeal – if you know something, now’s the time to speak up.
