Jamil Wilson, a 47-year-old resident of Wilmington Gardens in Eastbourne, has been imprisoned for seven years and six months for committing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent. The sentencing took place at Lewes Crown Court on January 2nd, following an incident in Brighton.
On the evening of October 12, 2022, between 7 and 10 pm, Wilson attacked a 27-year-old man from Brighton, whom he knew. The victim endured several hours of the assault, resulting in severe head and facial injuries, including a brain haemorrhage.
During the assault, another person living at the same address in Chelwood Close returned home, saw the victim’s injuries, and tried to call for medical help. However, Wilson intervened and prevented the call. The resident then fled the property through a window and flagged down a bus, whose driver alerted emergency services.
Upon arriving at the scene in Chelwood Close, police officers followed cries for help to a nearby field, where they found Wilson assaulting the victim. Wilson was promptly arrested, and the victim received immediate hospital treatment. In addition to the GBH charge, Wilson was also accused of common assault.
Investigating officer Rose Horan said: “This was a shocking attack on a vulnerable man inside his home. After the prolonged attack, which caused horrific facial and head injuries, Wilson pushed his victim to a nearby field, dragged him across the grass and began to strangle him.
“Thanks to the quick and courageous actions of the resident and the bus driver, police were on the scene and able to intervene.
“The victims were offered a considerable amount of support throughout the judicial process to help with the trauma of the incident.
“This violent offender is now off the streets for many years.”
