Just before 1pm on Saturday 22 May (2021), Mohammed Ibriham Hussain, of Dragon Road, Hatfield" target="_blank" rel="noopener" title="Hatfield" link="linked" id="118240">Hatfield, sped through a roundabout junction on Cavendish Way, colliding with a pedestrian who had been crossing the road, and failed to stop.
The pedestrian, a woman in her 50s, was left with life changing injuries as a result of the collision, including multiple serious fractures and a collapsed lung.
Through extensive investigation work, officers were able to identify the vehicle involved as being a black Toyota Prius hire car and established that it had been driven by Hussain. The vehicle was seized, and the suspect presented at a police station several days later where he gave a no comment interview.
Hussain was charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of a collision, failing to report a collision and failing to nominate a driver of a vehicle. He previously plead guilty at St Albans Magistrates Court on Friday 10 December (2021).
He appeared at St Albans Crown Court today (Friday 25 February) where he was sentenced to 18 months in prison. He was also disqualified from driving for 3 years and 9 months, and must pass an extended test after that period.
Detective Constable Felicity Moody, of the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “The victim is still suffering as a result of this collision, and our thoughts remain with her and her family. She suffered life-changing injuries as a result of this dangerous driving. This incident should go some way to remind drivers to be especially careful around vulnerable road users such as pedestrians.
“I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank PC Chris Giles, from the Welwyn Hatfield South Safer Neighbourhood Team, whose excellent work at the scene helped to quickly identify the vehicle that had been involved.”
