Hit-and-Run Horror in Hatfield: Driver Jailed for Life-Changing Crash

Just before 1pm on Saturday 22 May 2021, Mohammed Ibriham Hussain tore through a roundabout on Cavendish Way, Hatfield. His reckless speeding ended in disaster when he smashed into a woman in her 50s crossing the road—and then fled the scene.

Pedestrian Left with Severe Injuries

The victim suffered serious, life-changing injuries, including multiple fractures and a collapsed lung. Her recovery remains tough, with ongoing effects from the collision.

Driver Identified and Charged After Expert Police Work

Police launched an extensive investigation, tracing the offending vehicle to a black Toyota Prius hire car driven by Hussain. The car was seized, and Hussain later turned himself in, refusing to comment during police interviews.

He was charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury, failing to stop, failing to report the collision, and failing to nominate the driver.

Justice Served at St Albans Crown Court

Hussain pled guilty at St Albans Magistrates Court in December 2021. On Friday 25 February, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison. He also received a 3 year and 9 months driving ban and must pass an extended driving test before getting behind the wheel again.

“The victim is still suffering as a result of this collision, and our thoughts remain with her and her family. She suffered life-changing injuries due to this dangerous driving,” said Detective Constable Felicity Moody of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit. “This incident is a harsh reminder to all drivers to stay vigilant around pedestrians.”

“Special thanks to PC Chris Giles from the Welwyn Hatfield South Safer Neighbourhood Team whose quick, sharp work helped identify the vehicle involved,” she added.
