Man Gets 8½ Years for Raping Woman He Met Hours Earlier

Crime Details: From Instagram Chat to Nightmare
Okagbare met the victim, a woman in her twenties, through Instagram on the evening of 31 January 2020. They planned a night out but ended up at his home. The pair drank alcohol and smoked cannabis. The woman soon felt ill and went upstairs to the toilet.
She became sick and was helped to Okagbare’s bedroom, where she lost the ability to speak or move. Taking advantage, Okagbare raped her twice while she was unconscious. Once she recovered, the woman fled and called the police.
Justice Served and Warning Issued
Okagbare was arrested just two days later, on 2 February 2020. Investigators collected forensic and video evidence to secure his conviction. He will also be on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
“Okagbare cruelly took advantage of this woman’s incapacity and raped her twice when she was in no position to consent,” said Detective Sergeant Dean Young of the South East Public Protection Team.
“The woman showed tremendous strength in reporting the crime and seeing it through court. I hope this sentence offers her some closure.”
“I urge all victims of sexual offences to come forward and report it to police. We have specially trained officers ready to support you and bring offenders to justice.”
