Officers were called to Chanctonbury Way shortly after 10 p.m. to reports of a woman suffering serious head injuries in a weapon-assisted assault.
The ambulance service transported her to the hospital.
Officers responded, and a suspect – a 30-year-old man from Crawley – was quickly identified and arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
While the investigation is ongoing, he has been released on conditional bail.
“We understand that incidents like these are concerning, but I’d like to reassure the public that this appears to be an isolated incident with no wider risk of harm,” said investigating officer Detective James Reilly.
“As forensic investigations continue, there has been an increased police presence in the area over the last few days, and we thank the public for their patience and understanding.”
“Anyone who witnessed Wednesday’s incident or has any information that could assist with the investigation is asked to contact police online or by dialling 101 and referencing Operation Clifford.”
