Man Charged with Attempted Murder of Police Officer in Greenock Harbour Stabbing

Overview

The suspect allegedly fled the scene in a dinghy, sparking a manhunt that ended with his arrest at Rhu Marina near Helensburgh later that morning.

He has since been charged with attempted murder and will appear at Greenock Sheriff Court.

The officer has now been discharged from hospital and is recovering at home.

“Incredible Bravery” Praised by Police Scotland

Superintendent Emma MacKay of Police Scotland commended the officer and his colleagues for their actions during what she described as a “difficult and challenging incident.”

“The officer and his colleagues showed incredible bravery and professionalism during this terrifying ordeal,” said Supt MacKay. “Their swift actions ensured there was no wider risk to the public, and I would like to personally thank them for their efforts.”

Supt MacKay also expressed gratitude to emergency services and partner agencies who assisted at the scene.

“Our thoughts remain with the injured officer and his family as he recovers.”

Court Appearance

The suspect, who has not yet been named, is due to appear at Greenock Sheriff Court later today (Monday, 4 August) facing charges including attempted murder and resisting arrest.
