Tragic Death on Kirkton Avenue Sparks Investigation

Police have launched a murder inquiry following the death of 41-year-old Joanne Newlands at a block of flats on Kirkton Avenue, Glasgow. Officers rushed to the scene just after 8pm on Tuesday, 17 March 2026, responding to a welfare concern call. Despite emergency services’ efforts, Joanne was sadly pronounced dead at the property.

Man Arrested Then Released Amid Suspicious Circumstances

A 49-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday, 18 March in connection with Joanne’s death. However, he has since been released pending further investigations. Police describe the case as suspicious and say a thorough probe is ongoing.

Detectives Urge Witnesses to Come Forward

Detective Chief Inspector Gordon MacKenzie said: “Our thoughts are with Joanne’s family and friends at this time. We are providing them with support as our investigation continues. “An extensive investigation is being carried out and we are working to establish the full circumstances of what happened in the days prior to Joanne’s death. “I am appealing to anyone who may have any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to contact us as soon as possible.”

Local Area Commander Chief Inspector Karen Cameron added: “We understand the significant impact this will have on the community and we would like to thank everyone for their help so far. “There will be a continued police presence in the area as enquiries continue, and anyone with concerns can speak to officers.”
