Homeless Man Convicted of Murdering Elderly Gorleston Woman Who Took Him In
A homeless man who moved in with a kind-hearted woman in her 80s has been found guilty of her murder. Allan Scott, 42, was convicted at Norwich Crown Court after a jury took just over two hours to deliver a unanimous verdict.
From Friendship to Fatal Tragedy
Scott met Patricia Holland while homeless, selling paintings outside a shop on Gorleston High Street. He moved into her Lowestoft Road home in August 2020. Patricia, popular in her community and a regular churchgoer, had offered him shelter and support.
On the night of Saturday 24 July 2021, tensions flared. Neighbours called police after Patricia appeared distressed following an argument with Scott over burnt pasta. Although police intervened and Scott left the property to avoid a breach of the peace, CCTV captured him returning 17 minutes later.
Blood, Bones and a Bonfire Horror
The next day, Patricia’s daughter noticed blood on the door and alerted police after Scott told her Patricia was at church. A high-risk missing person enquiry was launched when the elderly woman failed to return home.
Neighbours reported a large bonfire in Patricia’s garden overnight. Forensics uncovered human bone fragments in the fire, along with jewellery identified by the family. Blood spatter was found extensively throughout the house, and evidence showed the crime scene had been tampered with.
Officers also found a blood-stained green T-shirt in the washing machine and cut carpet pieces recovered from the bonfire site — all signs Scott tried to cover up the grim attack.
Police Condemn ‘Callous’ Killing
“This is a truly shocking crime where a vulnerable, well-liked elderly woman was murdered in her home by a man she had taken sympathy on and provided shelter to,” said Senior Investigating Officer Chris Burgess. “The callous act of burning her body on a fire in the back garden is inexcusable.”
“Patricia was a familiar face at local cafes, church and food banks. We are grateful the jury have found Scott guilty today.”
Scott had already pleaded guilty to preventing lawful burial. His sentencing date is yet to be set.
