In a harrowing case that has shocked the community, James Morrison, 31, of no fixed address in Chippenham, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after pleading guilty to multiple counts of rape of a young boy. The sentencing took place at Winchester Crown Court on November 22
The disturbing series of events came to light on July 18 when Morrison appeared at Salisbury Crown Court and admitted to the following offences: four counts of rape of a child, engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child, causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and engaging in non-penetrative sexual activity with a child.
As a result, Morrison has been handed a sentence of 19 years and four months, with 13 years and four months to be served in prison and an additional six years on extended license. In addition, he has been issued a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will be required to sign the sex offenders register for life.
Detective Investigator Francesca Mason, a member of the Child Abuse Investigation Team (CAIT), applauded the bravery of the young victim for coming forward and disclosing the horrific crimes committed against him. Despite the threats made by Morrison, the victim’s mother discovered messages on her son’s phone, which prompted him to confide in her and report the incidents to the police.
Mason commended the young victim for exhibiting remarkable maturity throughout the court process, demonstrating bravery beyond his years in the face of an incredibly traumatic ordeal. She expressed gratitude that Morrison has received a substantial custodial sentence that reflects the gravity of his crimes. Morrison exploited the vulnerability of a defenceless child, subjecting him to abuse and subsequent threats.
As a member of the CAIT team, Mason emphasised the importance of reporting instances of sexual abuse to the authorities immediately. By doing so, victims enable law enforcement to bring offenders like Morrison to justice.
