Tesco is testing a bold new initiative aimed at slashing food waste by offering reduced-price yellow sticker items for free after 9:30pm at self-checkouts in participating Tesco Express stores.
The scheme is currently being trialled in select locations, with plans to monitor impact and scalability. Yellow sticker items — typically nearing their use-by dates — will scan at £0.00 during checkout, helping to prevent food from being discarded unnecessarily.
This is such a great idea, I hope all the other shops and supermarkets join them,” said one local shopper on social media.
Tesco’s Drive to End Food Waste
This move follows growing pressure on UK supermarkets to address the 9.5 million tonnes of food wasted annually across the country, according to WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme). Tesco has previously committed to reaching net zero waste in its operations, and this latest effort could be a game-changer if adopted widely.
For now, shoppers visiting Tesco Express after 9:30pm might just walk away with a free loaf of bread, salad, or sandwich — and contribute to a greener planet in the process.
