In a devastating incident that occurred yesterday, a bus collided with a shop, resulting in the unfortunate death of a pedestrian. The incident took place at approximately 1pm, prompting a swift response from officers and other emergency services.
The pedestrian, identified as Almena Amica, aged 77 and affectionately known as Mena to her loved ones, was immediately rushed to the hospital with severe injuries. Tragically, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, she passed away later on.
Almena’s grieving family has released a heartfelt tribute through Greater Manchester Police, sharing fond memories of their beloved relative. “Mena was a devoted family member who cherished her loved ones, friends, and her faith,” the family expressed. “She found joy in music, gardening, TV soaps, and the beauty of nature. As the eldest sister and great-great-aunt, she held a special place in our hearts. Her absence will be deeply felt, and we kindly ask for privacy during this time of mourning. We extend our gratitude to all the services and individuals who came to her aid.”
In addition to Almena’s tragic passing, eleven other individuals, including pedestrians and bus passengers, sustained minor injuries and were either treated at the scene or admitted to the hospital for further care.
Following the incident, a 64-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has since been released on bail.
Sergeant Louise Warhurst, a member of GMP’s Serious Injury Collision Unit (SCIU), expressed her condolences and provided an update on the investigation. “This was an incredibly tragic incident that unfolded in a bustling area of the city center, witnessed by numerous individuals,” Sergeant Warhurst stated. “Thanks to the invaluable information provided by the public, our investigation is progressing.
