Driver Arrested After Car Crashes Onto Railway Tracks in Manchester

  A driver has been arrested after a dramatic crash in Salford, Greater Manchester, which saw a car smash through a railway bridge and land upside down on the tracks below.

Rail Disruption Between Manchester and Liverpool

The crash has caused major disruption to commuters, forcing the closure of railway lines between Manchester and Liverpool this morning. Services to Newton-le-Willows and Wigan North Western have also been suspended as emergency crews deal with the aftermath.

Crash at Regent Road Roundabout

According to Greater Manchester Police (GMP), the incident occurred at a roundabout on Regent Road near Manchester City Centre. The vehicle ploughed through barriers, fell onto the tracks, and came to a rest upside down.

Driver Arrested for Drink Driving

A GMP spokesperson confirmed the driver was arrested after providing a positive breath sample for alcohol. The British Transport Police" link="linked" id="156250">British Transport Police (BTP) added that the driver was taken to hospital for assessment but is not believed to have sustained serious injuries.

Network Rail Issues Apology

Network Rail has apologized for the disruption, stating: "We are sorry to passengers travelling between Liverpool and Manchester today. Due to a police incident overnight involving a vehicle on the line at Salford, no trains are running.

Rail Services Impacted Until Afternoon

While Regent Road has since reopened at 7:30 AM, rail officials have warned that services will remain disrupted until at least 1 PM as debris is cleared and engineers inspect the damage.
