Violent Rampage Sparks Sheffield Rail Chaos
Gary Cawthorne, 40, from Sheffield’s Norfolk Park Road, has been locked up after triggering chaos at Sheffield railway station. It all started when he threw an unprovoked punch at a man, splitting his lip just after 4pm on 16 January 2025.
Man Flees onto Tracks, Wields Railway Bolt
British Transport Police officers caught up with Cawthorne on a waiting train. But when asked to step off for questioning, he made a run for it — jumping onto the railway tracks. The drama escalated when Cawthorne climbed a tall electrical box, grabbed a railway bolt, and began swinging it wildly at officers and paramedics. His dangerous stunt ground all rail services to a halt, sparking a four-hour standoff before he finally surrendered and was arrested.
Rail Network in Total Meltdown
- 36 trains cancelled
- 65 trains partially cancelled
- Over 50 hours of delays across the network
Cawthorne has pleaded guilty to obstructing the railway, affray, and assault. On 6 March, Sheffield Crown Court sentenced him to two years and eight months behind bars.
Officials Condemn ‘Reckless’ Offender
BTP Sergeant Roy Percival: “Cawthorne now has plenty of time to think about his reckless actions that endangered himself and others. Thousands were affected, and this sentence sends a clear warning that such behaviour leads straight to jail.”
Karen Duffy, Network Rail Operations Director: “Trespassing on railways is extremely dangerous—not just for the trespasser but also for emergency teams. We welcome this sentencing and hope it highlights that this kind of chaos will not be tolerated.”
