Shock in Leeds: A 38-year-old man who unleashed terror with a crossbow, injuring two women during the famous Otley Run pub crawl, has died from self-inflicted wounds, police reveal.
Crossbow Rampage on Otley Run Ends in Tragedy
Owen Lawrence, the attacker, struck on Saturday afternoon in Headingley, targeting female students enjoying the popular pub crawl. He was quickly arrested and rushed to hospital but later died of wounds thought to be self-inflicted, say Counter Terrorism Police.
Two Women Hurt, One Still Recovering
- The victims, aged 19 and 31, were hospitalized with serious injuries.
- One woman has been discharged; the other remains under care after surgery.
- Police confirm Lawrence acted alone; no other suspects are sought.
Facebook Rant Reveals Chilling Motive
Before the attack, Lawrence posted a disturbing manifesto titled “The Otley Run massacre.” He described plans for a spree killing fuelled by misogynistic rage and far-right extremism. Meta has since deleted his account loaded with hateful posts against feminists and other groups.
Weapons Seized and Community in Shock
- Police recovered a crossbow and a break barrel air rifle at the scene.
- Witnesses say Lawrence blended into the crowd; students initially thought his weapons were fancy dress props.
- Chaos erupted as people fled into pubs, with one café window smashed during the panic.
“It could have been much worse,” said one witness. “Students were running into pubs. No one knew what was happening.”
Police Pledge Thorough Probe
Detective Chief Superintendent James Dunkerley, head of Counter Terrorism Policing North East, said:
“We understand the concern this incident has caused and are conducting a thorough investigation. We continue to work with West Yorkshire Police and are grateful to the public for their support.”
Community leaders praised emergency responders for their quick action and extended support to victims.
